Preamble
The Jefferson Fund honors our third President, Thomas Jefferson; diplomat, traveler, author of the Declaration of Independence, founder of the University of Virginia, inventor, scholar, author, student of politics and the law, keen observer of the natural world and a passionate explorer of his place and time. The purpose of this fund will be to assist young men and women to pursue these Jeffersonian virtues.
Purpose
Moneys contributed to the Jefferson Fund will be used to fund grants:
- To supplement specific needs of Superior High School’s Mock Trial and Harvard Model United Nations programs as identified by the program’s advisor
- To assist students with special or unusual costs necessary for participation in either program
- To provide financial assistance for members of either organization to attend summer workshops or camps which specifically develop Mock Trial or Model U.N. skills; and, in addition,
- To supplement foreign travel costs for students to Third-World countries from funds specifically given for such purposes.
Grants for specific needs for the Mock Trial or H.M.U.N. program will be considered by the Board when official application is made by the advisor of the activity seeking funds. Official application forms will be available from the SHS principal.
Grants for special or unusual costs necessary for participation in either program by specific students will be considered by the Board when official application is made by the advisor of the activity seeking the funds. Official application forms will be available from the SHS principal.
Grants for participation in Mock Trial or H.M.U.N. summer camps or workshops by students will be considered by the Board when application has been submitted by students seeking funds. Applications will be available from the SHS principal. The application must be submitted in a timely manner.
Criteria
The Board will base its decision in awarding grants upon the following:
- That the grant will benefit the program.
- That the grant will benefit individual students.
- That the grant may have long term benefits to the individual student(s) involved by improving or enhancing a literary, artistic, musical, scientific, teaching, or other similar capacity skill or talent.
- That funds for Mock Trial or H.M.U.N. camps or workshops be approved only for such camps or workshops sponsored by educational institutions or professional organizations.
- That grants to specific students should not exceed 90 percent of the cost of the travel, camp or item unless there are very special circumstances. But that they be large enough to promote the goal.
Grant Funding
When awarding grants, the Board shall use as a guide that the fund not be reduced below $8,000 and that 85 percent of the monies (except any specifically designated otherwise) should be used to support Mock Trial.
Announcing of Grants
The Board will announce the recipient and the amounts of all grants in a timely manner.
Awarding of Grants
No grants will actually be awarded until the recipient has completed a purchase order which shall include the person, business or institution to be paid and a bill or description of service and its cost from the person, business or institution to which the check is to be made.
